Royal jelly transforms normal bees into, well, royalty
When worker bees want a new queen bee - say, because the last one died - they feed larvae copious amounts of royal jelly. A single protein in royal jelly, royalactin, is responsibly for many of the drastic physiological changes that the queen bee undergoes, according to a new study in Nature. Amazingly, if a fruit fly drinks royal jelly, it will also develop queen bee-like traits!
